Why I'm Blogging

Hey all!

I'm Erik. Enclosed is a quick introduction to me and my blog.

I'm a loquacious university student studying family science. I'm a long-distance runner, a "recovering" chocolate-aholic, and a child of divorce who loves his family. This hasn't always been easy for me or my parents. In fact, between growing up in a single-parent home with limited access to my dad, then narrowly surviving the blending--and then drifting apart--of two family cultures after my mom remarried, I feel I've had a good swig of the altogether too-popular beverage we call divorce and am sorry to say that the aftertaste still plagues my family.

While I applaud my mom and my two terrific dads for the awesome job they did in raising me and my five siblings, my family circumstances have never been what I would call ideal. This prompted my lifelong quest to understand what makes happy families tick.  I've learned a lot in life's laboratory--though I still have lots to learn--and recently decided to take my questions to school with me. This blog is largely to share what I'm learning at school on the topic, reflecting what the research teaches me, and my comments thereon.

The blog is a requirement for one of my courses as a space for me to reflect on what I've learned in class, so you'll find many of the posts serve that purpose. In addition, I'm going to be sharing any other particularly riveting insights I have as to the nature of family and other relationships, so stay tuned for those posts! Lastly, I'm including links to my classmates pages to this site. If you have the time I'd encourage you to take a look at their blogs and see what others are learning about families. I hope you enjoy the blog!

Lastly, I really believe that questions help us all to grow, as they foster understanding and help us not to grow too comfortable in our own head-space. If you have any questions or comments as you read, please post them! I'd be happy to hear the thoughts you're having.
